Janjivan Bureau/ New Delhi : To commemorate the UN World Food Day, Sulabh International, India’s leading social service organization, underscored the importance of diversity, nutrition, affordability, accessibility, and food safety. The event served as a platform for women farmers from across India, who have benefitted from Sulabh’s food program, to showcase their produce.
Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Affairs, Mr. Ram Nath Thakur, addressed the gathering and highlighted the government’s allocation of ₹1 lakh crore for the development of storage and cold storage facilities, ensuring proper food preservation across the country. He emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given special attention to the agricultural sector, and this year’s budget reflects a significant boost aimed at improving storage capacities for all kinds of agricultural produce, including fruits and vegetables. Mr. Thakur also called for intensive research to improve soil conditions for enhanced yields and better-quality production. With a special focus on North Bihar, he mentioned the untapped potential in Makhana and fish farming across seven districts where pond availability is favorable.
Executive Mayor of Cape Town, South Africa, Mr. Geordin Hill Lewis, drew parallels between the food security challenges in South Africa and India. He expressed his interest in learning from the food safety programs being implemented in India, alongside sanitation initiatives.
President of Sulabh International, Mr. Kumar Dilip, remarked that Sulabh’s focus on food security emerged from the vision of its founder, late Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, whose commitment to holistic development sought to address not just sanitation but the root causes of poverty and inequality. “By empowering rural women through agriculture, we aim to create sustainable livelihoods, improve household nutrition, and foster community resilience. This approach aligns with our broader mission of social justice and uplifting marginalized communities,” he added.
Senior Vice President and Head of Communications of Sulabh International, Dr. Sutirtha Sahariah, provided insights into the Sulabh Food Program, which has empowered over 2,500 rural women by promoting the cultivation of climate-resilient indigenous crops. The initiative not only improves food security but also strengthens local economies and promotes environmental sustainability. Dr. Sahariah proudly noted that the program received global recognition at this year’s Stop Hunger event in Paris.
Mr. DN Thakur, President of Sahakar Bharati, emphasized the need for a more constructive approach toward the development of society, highlighting the critical role of agriculture in building resilient communities.
