New Delhi: An infected kidney weighing 2.75 kg was removed by surgeons at a city hospital here from a person suffering from Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD).The hospital surgeons claimed that they removed the world’s largest in size.
Surgeons of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRM) conducted a surgery on Monday to remove the world’s largest kidney weighing 2.75 kgs from a patient’s body as a life saving procedure.
The patient had visited the hospital in 2014 and was diagnosed with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD). The patient again visited the hospital in March, as he was suffering with chronic renal failure and severe pain in abdomen, blood in urine and high grade fever. He was suggested to have his kidney removed.
Dr. Manu Gupta, who performed the three- hour surgery, said that the procedure was quite challenging. Gupta added that a normal kidney weigh 130 grams approximately whereas the patient’s kidney weighed 2.75 kgs, which is 20 times more.
She added that the patient’s second kidney was also removed a week later as it weighed 2.5 kgs. Gupta further said that the patient had about 5 kgs extra weight due to these kidneys.
